Making dirt. Who would think this would be fun?

Annually we like to get together and make soil before the spring repotting/potting season. Above: Sterling, Nancy and Connie take a break in between sifting and mixing. Below: Shane looks through a bucket of sifted peat moss. We share in the spoils. Not pictured: Dan and Paul

Collecting material from the wild can be a greatly rewarding experience. We at TPBS gather each spring to collect mostly Larix species around our area. Seen here is Paul and a nice specimen Larch. Good material is found, cleaned up and potted into training crates or boxes. A good rule of thumb, 1st year ensure survival, leave it alone. 2nd year, ensure revival, not too stressful styling considerations are done. 3rd year.....thrive!!! Major styling and root pruning is done.
